Behind the Scenes
Lodi Adopt-A-Child (LAAC) is an all-volunteer organization. Currently no one receives a salary or a stipend for his or her efforts. Each dollar received goes toward providing services and help to kids.
The Board of Directors has taken the stance that we are in existence for one reason and one reason only; the children. Not all children are born into equal financial status and often miss an opportunity to grow into productive citizens of the community. The clients we serve are people that need a hand up and a helping hand, not a hand out.
LAAC started in the mid-eighties with a street cop with a big heart, Dennis Lewis. Dennis saw families with children that were not going to have much of a Christmas. He twisted arms in the squad room and came up with money to buy presents and food for nine kids and their family. Much of the early work and sponsorship was from the Lodi Police Officers Association.
As the list of children grew, the citizens of Lodi were asked to “adopt a child for Christmas”; thus, our name, Lodi Adopt-A-Child. In 1989, LAAC incorporated as a non-profit. Over the years, the number of children given Christmas gifts has increased to over 1100. LAAC provides needed clothing and a special gift to underprivileged children in the Lodi area between the ages of 0-14.
In 1994 the program grew to include a back to school shopping spree. Originally each child selected to participate in the program was taken shopping to purchase much needed back to school clothing. In 2009, it was determined that we would set up our own store. LAAC now has a school uniform company bring their wares to Lodi. Each child is given 3 pair of pants, 3 shirts, a sweatshirt, socks, underwear and a certificate for a new pair of shoes. Children selected for participation in this program come from names given to us by the Lodi Unified School District.
In addition, we stand ready to provide immediate assistance when a family is faced with a personal tragedy. LAAC has secured beds and bedding for kids when LAAC has been informed they do not have one. LAAC has paid rent and utilities when a bread winner loses a job, or funeral expenses when an unwed mother gave birth to a still born child, we have provided food and assistance to a family whose home burned to the ground, we provide new shoes and a jacket to kids that need one. This list is not complete, but it does give a snapshot of how we are ready to serve the community.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to LAAC we would much appreciate it. You can make your donation to Lodi Adopt-A-Child and send it to Post Office Box 2479 Lodi, CA 95241 or drop it off at 100 E. Pine, Lodi, CA 95240
